Victoria Converts Brown Coal To Power And Light – Australian Diary 14

Australian Workers Film Guide

Summary

Produced in the post war years, this newsreel profiles the Yallourn open cut coal mine and power house in Victoria, which produces two thirds of the state’s electricity. Drawing on a 200 feet deep seam of brown coal, this mine is highly mechanised and automated, with coal extracted by giant dredgers and automatically transported to the power house, where a small number of workers manage the power generation. The coal is also used to produce brown coal briquettes.
